Across the nation, the best students are taught to ask difficult questions, ones that are vitally important but do not have immediate answers. At Rice, our students take that inquisitiveness to the next level and begin formulating solutions.

Alley Lyles ’08 set out to investigate the impact of gentrification on Houston’s Second Ward, one of the oldest Hispanic neighborhoods in the city. With guidance and financial support from Rice’s Center for Civic Engagement, Alley collaborated with Rice faculty to interview developers, city council members and residents of the ward to help identify and address the financial, social and cultural impacts of urban renewal on the community. She recently won a coveted Rice Wagoner Fellowship, which will allow her to further her research in Spain and take courses at the London School of Economics. Afterwards, she will attend Northwestern University to pursue a Ph.D. in sociology.

Last year, gifts to the Annual Fund for Student Life and Learning helped support the kind of community-based research opportunities few other universities offer to undergraduates. By giving again to the Annual Fund, which provides funding for the CCE, you will enable more deserving students like Alley Lyles practice leadership in real-world contexts and pursue projects that have true significance in Houston and beyond.
