Your gift last year to the Rice Annual Fund provided important scholarship support for students like Keith Stonum ’09, a voice major in Rice’s Shepherd School of Music. Below, Keith speaks about an outreach experience that allowed him and other Shepherd students to venture beyond the hedges and make extraordinary discoveries.
“One of my most memorable experiences at Rice was performing a children’s opera at a local elementary school, which was located in one of the most impoverished areas of Houston. At the time of the performance, we were unaware that the children had learned the lyrics to the opera, which was about China, for a special geography unit. As the children sang along with us, I thought, ‘This is something these kids are never going to forget.’ Later on, when someone asks them if they want to go to the opera, they are going to be excited about it.”
