Dear Lindsay,

Having just concluded my first year as dean of the School of Liberal Arts, I want to take this opportunity to share with you some of the activities that are taking place in SLA. As the largest school at Tulane, we encompass the arts, humanities and social sciences through fifteen departments and nineteen interdisciplinary programs, as well as the Newcomb Gallery of Art, the Carroll Gallery, Shakespeare Festival, Summer Lyric, and the Middle American Research Institute. The school has recently completed a new strategic plan for expanding and enhancing the liberal arts over the next five years. Stellar, diverse new faculty are being hired on all levels. Efforts to equip classrooms with the latest presentation technology, such as Smartboards and specialized studios and labs in the visual and performing arts, are already underway. In addition, new Ph.D. programs in French, Linguistics, and Aging Studies will add breadth to the already significant offerings at the school. In the coming year, we will be reviving and restructuring our Deep South Regional Center as we transform it into a leading platform for interdisciplinary work on the region’s history, identity, and culture. Our newly redesigned website has more information on these and other accomplishments. I invite you to visit http://tulane.edu/liberal-arts/ -- we would love your feedback.

Our alumni can take pride in our efforts to strengthen the undergraduate programs, create meaningful service-learning opportunities, and establish world-class graduate research program. Even as enrollment in SLA soars to 1,900 undergraduates and over 300 graduate students, we remain committed to small classes that allow students to be engaged in their courses and to learn directly from internationally recognized teacher-scholars. Our broad range of majors, coordinate majors, and minors allows all who enroll in SLA to delve deeply into an established interest or to discover a new passion.

These achievements and initiatives are made possible only through the generosity of alumni and friends like you. We hope you will support us in implementing our strategic plan that will make SLA a national leader in liberal arts education. Please consider making a gift to the Tulane Fund today in support of the School of Liberal Arts. You can make a donation by clicking on the link below or by calling 504-865-5794 or 888-265-7576, or online at http://tulane.edu/giving. If you’ve already made a gift, thank you! Thank you!

Sincerely,
