Dear Lindsay,

As members of the Tulane community, I am sure that you share my pride in the university's tremendous success in 2009. This year, we broke the record for the number of applications received. Nearly 40,000 high school seniors from around the country applied for 1400 spots in the fall freshman class. By adopting public service as a core part of our curriculum, we inspired a generation of phenomenal students throughout the nation to come to New Orleans for their college education. Students are rebuilding neighborhoods, working to improve public education, learning principles of social entrepreneurship, and travelling the world to engage in extensive community outreach.

The nation is taking notice of what Tulane is accomplishing for the greater good. I was deeply honored to find my name listed among the nation's 10 Best College Presidents by Time magazine. Time cited the university's high academic standards and increased emphasis on public service as reasons for bestowing this outstanding recognition. It comes just after being chosen as one of four university leaders around the nation to receive the 2009 Carnegie Corporation Academic Leadership Award. This award provides Tulane with $500,000, which we will use to build upon our strengths in civic engagement and public service.

These honors are the result of the fantastic group of people who make up this dynamic organization. Our students, faculty, and staff are simply amazing! They are the reason readers of Gambit recently voted Tulane the "best place to work" in New Orleans for the second time. With nearly 4,000 employees, Tulane remains the largest employer in the city, and we are gratified to receive this recognition for yet another year.

It is the dedication and generosity of alumni, parents, and friends like you that makes these achievements and honors possible. Your support is more important than ever as we prepare to enter a new decade. Your participation, whatever the size of your gift, helps to ensure that we continue to develop innovative new programs, increase enrollment, and build upon our renowned faculty.
